Since its inception in 1949, The Stella Adler Studio of Acting has turned out dozens of highly talented performers including Marlon Brando, Salma Hayek, and Robert De Niro, just to name a few. But that was never the mission of the institution nor the late namesake, Stella Adler herself. Instead, as articulated by Tom Oppenheim, the studio’s Artistic Director and grandson of Ms. Adler, “the spirit of Stella Adler is summarized by the insight that growth as an actor and growth as a human being are synonymous.” The theater is a space that has the ability to nurture artists and audiences, cultivate values, and educate the community. Programs offered through the Stella Adler Outreach Division do this unequivocally; bringing theater arts and inspiration to its participants in prison and drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers in Queens, New York.
